At Kielder Primary School and Nursery, we consider physical activity to be a vital part of every school day. We believe that being active supports not only physical health, but also children’s wellbeing, confidence, behaviour and readiness to learn.
We aim to develop positive attitudes towards physical activity so that children build healthy habits that last beyond primary school.
What is the PE and Sport Premium?
The Government provides additional funding to primary schools through the PE and Sport Premium. This funding is allocated to improve the quality of physical education, physical activity and sport, and to increase participation for all pupils.
The funding is paid directly to schools, and headteachers have the flexibility to decide how it is used to best meet the needs of their pupils.
How we use the funding
At Kielder Primary School, we use the PE and Sport Premium strategically to improve access, opportunity and participation for our pupils.
A significant proportion of the funding is used to support our school minibus, which enables us to:
transport pupils to partnership sports events and festivals
take part in competitions and activities across the West Northumberland area
ensure pupils in a rural location can access the same breadth of opportunities as pupils in larger schools
increase participation by removing transport as a barrier
This approach helps to ensure that all pupils, regardless of background or location, can take part in a wide range of physical and sporting experiences.
A full breakdown of how we spend the PE and Sport Premium, along with the impact of this funding, is available in the statement at the bottom of this page.
Our approach to Physical Education
At Kielder Primary School, physical education plays a vital role in children’s physical, social, emotional and intellectual development.
Through our PE curriculum, we aim to:
build pupils’ confidence and self-belief
develop physical competence and coordination
encourage teamwork, cooperation and respect
promote resilience, perseverance and positive attitudes
support children to make informed choices about healthy living
Children take part in a wide range of physical activities in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment. We celebrate effort and improvement as well as success, and we encourage all pupils to enjoy being active and to try new challenges.
Inclusion and participation
We are committed to ensuring that all pupils can access and enjoy physical activity, including those with additional needs or who may lack confidence.
Activities are adapted where needed so that every child can:
participate fully
experience success
develop confidence and motivation
feel included as part of a team
This inclusive approach helps pupils to develop positive relationships, self-esteem and a sense of belonging.
