Intent

At Kielder Primary School, we envision a reading comprehension curriculum that nurtures a profound and joyful engagement with texts, equipping pupils with the skills to become confident, thoughtful, and skilled readers. Through the integration of Literacy Shed + and the VIPERS method, we aim to provide a comprehensive and dynamic approach to reading comprehension that meets the diverse needs of our children

Implementation
  1. Deep Understanding and Analysis: We are committed to fostering a deep understanding of texts through the systematic application of the VIPERS method. Literacy Shed + provides a rich array of high-quality, engaging texts that support this comprehensive approach, helping pupils develop robust comprehension skills.

  2. Engaging and Interactive Learning: We strive to create an engaging and interactive learning environment where children are motivated to explore and analyse texts. Literacy Shed+ offers a diverse selection of resources that captivate children’s imaginations, while the VIPERS method encourages active participation through targeted comprehension strategies.

  3. Critical Thinking and Reflection: Our curriculum emphasises the development of critical thinking skills. By using the VIPERS method, pupils learn to critically evaluate texts, make inferences, predict outcomes, and articulate their understanding, fostering a deeper and more reflective approach to reading.

  4. Differentiated Instruction: We recognise the varied needs within our mixed-age classes and tailor our instruction to ensure that all pupils can benefit from and engage with reading comprehension activities. Literacy Shed+’s adaptable resources, combined with the structured VIPERS approach, allow us to support each child’s individual progress effectively.

  5. Cultivating a Love for Reading: We aim to instil a lifelong passion for reading by providing children with diverse and stimulating texts. Literacy Shed +’s engaging content and the interactive nature of the VIPERS method help children develop a genuine enthusiasm for reading and a desire to explore a wide range of literary genres.

Impact

Through our reading comprehension curriculum, supported by Literacy Shed+ and the VIPERS method, we aspire for pupils to:

  1. Achieve Proficient Comprehension: Demonstrate strong comprehension skills by effectively applying VIPERS strategies to understand and analyse various texts.

  2. Engage Deeply with Texts: Approach reading with curiosity and critical insight, enjoying the process of exploring and interpreting diverse literary works.

  3. Build Confidence and Independence: Develop confidence in their reading abilities and become independent, thoughtful readers capable of tackling a wide range of texts with ease.

  4. Enhance Overall Literacy: Utilise their reading comprehension skills across all areas of their learning, contributing to their overall academic success and personal growth.

By integrating Literacy Shed+ and the VIPERS method into our curriculum, we are dedicated to providing a reading comprehension program that is both effective and inspiring. Our approach ensures that pupils not only develop strong comprehension skills but also foster a lasting love for reading, preparing them for continued success and enjoyment in their literary journey.
