At Kielder Primary School and Nursery, keeping children safe online is a key part of our safeguarding responsibilities. We recognise that the digital world is an important part of children’s lives, and we are committed to teaching pupils how to use technology safely, responsibly and confidently.
Online safety is taught regularly and progressively across the curriculum. Children learn about staying safe online through PSHE, Computing and cross-curricular activities, using age-appropriate resources, including Project Evolve and National Online Safety guidance. This ensures that key messages are revisited and built upon as children move through the school.
We also take part in special awareness events and themed days and weeks, such as Safer Internet Day, to reinforce important messages and provide opportunities for focused discussion and learning. In addition, we work closely with the Local Authority Schools Safeguarding Team to ensure that our approach reflects current guidance and emerging risks.
Our school has robust filtering and monitoring systems in place to help protect pupils when using school devices and networks. These systems are regularly reviewed and updated to ensure they remain effective and in line with statutory requirements.
Children are taught who they can speak to if they are worried or upset about anything they have seen online, and we place a strong emphasis on open communication so that pupils feel confident to report concerns.
We also work in partnership with parents and carers to promote online safety at home. Our Online Safety Policy and Acceptable Use Agreements for staff, volunteers, pupils and parents/carers are available below, and we regularly share guidance and updates to help families support safe and responsible technology use.
Together, we aim to create a safe, supportive digital environment where children can learn, explore and communicate with confidence.
