Intent

Our Computing curriculum is designed to cultivate a deep understanding and appreciation of technology, ensuring that all pupils develop the necessary skills to thrive in a digital age. We aim to provide a well-rounded education that integrates the principles of computer science, digital literacy, and information technology. Our curriculum is driven by a commitment to fostering creativity, problem-solving abilities, and responsible digital citizenship. By adhering to the National Curriculum Programme of Study for Computing and incorporating guidance from the National Centre for Computing Education and Project Evolve, we aspire to prepare pupils to navigate the digital world safely and effectively.

Implementation

In our small primary school with mixed-age classes, we implement the Computing curriculum through a thoughtful and flexible approach that meets diverse learning needs and promotes continuous progress:

  1. Curriculum Structure:

    • Pinpoint Planning: We have a curriculum that is planned collaboratively with the NCCE to meet the needs of our current cohort, ensuring that pupils develop a deep and evolving understanding of key topics over time.

    • Differentiated Objectives: We tailor learning objectives to be age-appropriate and relevant, accommodating the varied developmental stages and abilities within our mixed-age classes.

  2. Engaging Pedagogy:

    • Interactive Learning: We employ a variety of engaging resources and hands-on activities, including coding platforms, digital storytelling, and interactive simulations, to make computing concepts accessible and exciting.

    • Project-Based Approach: We facilitate project-based learning that allows pupils to apply their knowledge creatively, solve real-world problems, and collaborate with peers.

  3. Digital Citizenship and Online Safety:

    • Integrated Online Safety Education: We incorporate online safety and digital citizenship into every aspect of the curriculum, following Project Evolve’s guidelines to ensure pupils understand how to use technology responsibly and safely.

    • Practical Scenarios: We use real-life scenarios and discussions to teach pupils about online risks, privacy, and the ethical use of digital resources, promoting a proactive approach to online safety.

  4. Assessment and Adaptation:

    • Formative Assessment: We implement regular formative assessments to monitor student progress, using observations, quizzes, and project evaluations to tailor instruction to individual needs.

    • Flexible Grouping: We adapt teaching methods and group dynamics to accommodate varying levels of ability, ensuring all pupils are challenged appropriately and can achieve their full potential.

Impact

The impact of our Computing curriculum is assessed through multiple indicators that reflect student growth, engagement, and preparedness:

  1. Skill Acquisition: We measure improvements in pupils’ computing skills, including programming, data analysis, and digital problem-solving, to ensure they meet curriculum goals.

  2. Confidence and Competence: We evaluate pupils’ confidence in using technology and their ability to apply computing skills effectively in various contexts.

  3. Responsible Behaviour: We observe pupils’ understanding and practice of online safety and responsible digital behaviour, reflecting their awareness of how to navigate the digital world securely.

  4. Engagement and Attitudes: We assess pupils’ enthusiasm for computing and their positive attitudes towards technology and digital learning experiences.

  5. Future Preparedness: We determine how well pupils are prepared for future educational challenges and technological advancements, ensuring that the curriculum provides a solid foundation for ongoing learning.

By aligning our Computing curriculum with the NCCE’s programmes, Project Evolve’s online safety principles, and the National Curriculum Programme of Study, we aim to provide a comprehensive and effective computing education that empowers our pupils to become confident, responsible, and innovative digital citizens.
