PSHE/RSE

At our school, Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education (PSHE) is a vital component of our curriculum, guided by the PSHE Association's Programme of Study. We are dedicated to delivering a comprehensive PSHE education that supports the holistic development of our children. The programme is designed to meet the needs of diverse learners, including those in mixed-age classes, and to promote the well-being, personal growth, and social responsibility of every child.

Intent
Our PSHE and RSE curriculum is dedicated to nurturing the holistic development of each child by focusing on three key themes: Health and Well-being, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World. We aim to provide pupils with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to lead healthy, fulfilling lives, form positive relationships, and become responsible, active members of their communities. By aligning with the PSHE Association scheme of work, we ensure our curriculum is comprehensive, age-appropriate, and relevant, fostering a positive, inclusive learning environment where every child can thrive. 
Implementation 
In our small school with mixed-age classes, PSHE and RSE are delivered through a structured yet adaptable approach. We utilise the PSHE Association scheme of work to guide our teaching across the three key themes:

  1. Health and Well-being: Lessons focus on physical and mental health, encouraging pupils to develop healthy habits, understand emotions, and seek help when needed. We incorporate activities like mindfulness exercises, healthy eating discussions, and self-care strategies, adapted to suit various age groups.

  2. Relationships: We emphasise the importance of building and maintaining positive relationships with peers, family, and others. Through role-plays, group discussions, and problem-solving activities, pupils learn about empathy, communication, and respect, tailored to their developmental stage.

  3. Living in the Wider World: Pupils explore their roles and responsibilities within the community and the broader world. Lessons cover topics such as economic understanding, environmental stewardship, and civic participation. We use project-based learning and real-world scenarios to help pupils connect their learning with everyday life.

Impact

Our PSHE and RSE curriculum will equip pupils with essential life skills and knowledge that will positively impact their personal development and interactions with others. By the end of their primary education, pupils will demonstrate:

  • A strong understanding of how to maintain physical and mental health and well-being.
  • The ability to build and sustain respectful, healthy relationships.
  • An awareness of their role in the community and a sense of responsibility towards others and the environment.

The impact will be evident in pupils' increased confidence, empathy, and their ability to make informed, positive choices in various aspects of their lives. They will be well-prepared for the challenges of secondary education and life beyond school, contributing positively to their communities and society.
