Our Independent Enquiry Projects (IEPs) give pupils the opportunity to explore their interests, develop independence, and become confident, curious learners.
Each half term, children take part in a themed enquiry linked to real-world issues, global citizenship and personal development. Pupils choose a focus that interests them and investigate it in a way that suits their age and stage — through research, creativity, discussion, making, and presentation.
IEPs are carefully designed so that all pupils from Reception to Year 6 can access the same big ideas, with activities and outcomes adapted to support different ages and abilities. Children might create artwork, models, posters, books, presentations or performances to share what they have learned.
These projects help pupils to:
develop curiosity and a love of learning
practise research, thinking and communication skills
build confidence, resilience and independence
make links between learning, values and the wider world
Our Independent Enquiry Projects are aligned with the Thrive and Excel @ Kielder Framework, supporting children’s academic learning alongside wellbeing, communication, creativity and social responsibility. Many projects also link to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, helping pupils understand how they can make a positive difference locally and globally.
IEPs culminate in a Celebration of Achievement event, to which governors and parents/carers are invited, giving children a real audience for their work and a sense of pride in their achievements.
