What is the Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium is additional funding provided to schools to help ensure that all pupils have equal access to high-quality education and opportunities. It is designed to support pupils who may face barriers to learning and to help schools remove those barriers so that every child can thrive.

At Kielder Primary School, we use Pupil Premium funding to support inclusion, raise aspirations and ensure that all pupils are able to achieve their full potential.

Pupil Premium funding is provided for:

  • pupils who have been eligible for free school meals at any point in the last six years

  • children who are or have been in local authority care

  • children from armed forces families

What are the aims of the Pupil Premium?

The purpose of the Pupil Premium is to ensure that pupils who may face additional challenges are supported to make strong progress and to fully participate in all aspects of school life.

At Kielder Primary School, Pupil Premium funding is used to:

  • remove barriers to learning

  • support pupils’ wellbeing, confidence and readiness to learn

  • raise attainment and close gaps where they exist

  • provide targeted academic and pastoral support

  • ensure equal access to enrichment, experiences and wider opportunities

  • promote high expectations and ambition for all pupils

Our approach is based on understanding each child as an individual and providing the right support at the right time, alongside high-quality teaching for all.

Recovery and additional support funding

In previous years, schools received additional funding to support pupils whose education was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This funding was targeted at pupils who were already eligible for Pupil Premium and those in specialist settings, recognising the additional challenges some pupils experienced.

While specific recovery funding has changed over time, we continue to prioritise:

  • identifying gaps in learning

  • supporting pupils’ emotional wellbeing

  • helping pupils to re-engage positively with learning

  • ensuring no child is disadvantaged by circumstances beyond their control

Our commitment

At Kielder Primary School, Pupil Premium is an integral part of our wider commitment to inclusion, equity and excellence. We regularly review the impact of our strategies to ensure that funding is used effectively and that all pupils are supported to achieve, belong and succeed.
