Intent

At Kielder Primary School and Nursery, we envision a phonics curriculum that provides a strong and secure foundation for every child’s literacy journey. Using the Read Write Inc. systematic synthetic phonics programme, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils develop the essential decoding and encoding skills needed to become confident, fluent readers and writers.

Within our small, mixed-age setting, our phonics provision is designed to meet the needs of all learners through an inclusive, supportive and high-expectation approach. We aim to foster a positive attitude to reading and writing from the earliest stages, helping pupils to build confidence, resilience and a love of literacy. This aligns closely with our Thrive and Excel @ Kielder Framework, supporting pupils’ academic development, wellbeing, communication and independence, and ensuring that pupils are equipped with the skills and dispositions to thrive as learners.

Our phonics curriculum ensures that every child is given the best possible start, enabling them to access the wider curriculum and achieve long-term success. Through strong foundations in phonics, pupils develop the confidence and self-belief to approach learning positively, reflecting the TEK Framework’s focus on resilience, growth mindset and lifelong learning.

Implementation

Our phonics provision is underpinned by a structured, consistent and progressive approach through Read Write Inc., alongside ongoing professional development and quality assurance. Key elements of our implementation include:

Foundational Literacy Skills through Read Write Inc.
Phonics is taught as the cornerstone of early literacy. Through Read Write Inc., pupils follow a structured and systematic sequence that supports them in mastering the essential skills of decoding for reading and encoding for spelling. This ensures that pupils develop secure letter–sound knowledge and the ability to apply this accurately in reading and writing.

Inclusive and Targeted Provision in Mixed-Age Classes
Recognising the diverse needs within our mixed-age classes, phonics teaching is carefully tailored to ensure that all children, regardless of age or starting point, receive teaching that is closely matched to their needs. Flexible grouping, differentiation and targeted interventions are used to ensure that gaps are identified quickly and addressed effectively. This personalised approach supports the TEK Framework’s emphasis on equity, inclusion and individual growth.

Engaging and Effective Teaching
Phonics lessons are interactive, structured and engaging. The multisensory approach of Read Write Inc., including partner work, oral rehearsal and interactive activities, supports high levels of pupil engagement and helps pupils to retain and apply their learning. This promotes positive attitudes to learning and supports pupils’ confidence and motivation, in line with the TEK Framework’s focus on wellbeing and engagement.

Ongoing Professional Development and Specialist Support
To ensure consistently high-quality phonics teaching, we work closely with a Read Write Inc. specialist, who visits school three times a year to support the development of staff practice. These visits provide expert coaching, lesson observations, feedback and training, enabling staff to refine delivery, maintain fidelity to the programme and continually improve the quality of phonics teaching. This commitment to professional learning reflects the TEK Framework’s focus on continuous improvement, reflective practice and excellence.

Progressive and Responsive Learning Journey
The structured progression within Read Write Inc. ensures that phonics teaching builds systematically on prior learning. Ongoing assessment informs teaching and flexible grouping, ensuring that provision remains responsive to pupils’ developing needs. Pupils are supported to consolidate learning, revisit key skills where needed and move forward securely. This responsive approach supports pupils’ resilience, perseverance and metacognitive awareness, key elements of the TEK Framework.

Building Confidence and Positive Reading Behaviours
We create a positive and encouraging learning environment in which pupils are supported to develop confidence in their reading and writing. Progress is celebrated and constructive feedback is used to motivate pupils and help them understand how to improve. This supports pupils to develop positive learning behaviours, self-belief and independence, directly linking to the TEK Framework’s wellbeing and communication competencies.

Impact

Through our high-quality phonics curriculum, guided by Read Write Inc. and aligned with the TEK Framework, we ensure that:

  • Pupils develop secure phonics knowledge and are able to decode and encode words confidently and accurately.

  • Pupils become fluent, increasingly independent readers and writers who take pride in their progress.

  • Pupils demonstrate resilience and perseverance when faced with challenges in reading and spelling.

  • Gaps in phonics knowledge are identified early and addressed quickly through targeted support.

  • Pupils develop confidence, positive learning behaviours and a strong belief in their ability to succeed.

Our phonics provision provides a robust and nurturing foundation for literacy, ensuring that all pupils are supported to become confident, motivated and enthusiastic readers and writers. Through our inclusive approach, specialist support from Read Write Inc. and alignment with the TEK Framework, we are committed to continuous improvement and to ensuring that every child experiences success in their early literacy journey.
