At Kielder Primary School and Nursery, we believe that handwriting is a foundational skill which supports pupils to become confident, fluent and successful writers. We recognise that when handwriting becomes automatic, pupils can devote more of their cognitive attention to composing, organising and improving their ideas rather than forming letters.
Our handwriting curriculum is designed to ensure that pupils:
Develop correct letter formation from the earliest stages of learning.
Build fluency, stamina and automaticity in handwriting.
Learn to present their work with pride and care.
Transfer handwriting skills consistently across the curriculum.
Understand that effective communication depends on both what is written and how it is presented.
Handwriting is taught as part of a broader approach to writing development that includes oral language, composition, transcription, spelling and dictation. We recognise that strong handwriting is not an isolated skill but an important component of successful written communication.
Implementation
Handwriting is taught explicitly and systematically throughout the school.
In the Early Years and Key Stage 1, handwriting development is closely linked to our Read Write Inc. phonics programme, ensuring that children learn correct letter formation alongside early reading and writing skills.
Across the school, pupils participate in:
Daily focused handwriting practice.
Explicit teaching and modelling of correct letter formation, orientation and joins.
Opportunities to rehearse and refine handwriting skills through carefully structured practice.
Regular dictation activities which help pupils apply handwriting, spelling, punctuation and sentence construction simultaneously.
Consistent expectations for presentation across all curriculum areas.
Teachers provide immediate feedback and address misconceptions promptly to prevent incorrect habits from becoming embedded.
Where possible, handwriting practice is personalised and meaningful, using vocabulary, themes and interests that engage pupils and encourage sustained effort.
As a small school, we are able to provide highly responsive support, ensuring that individual needs are identified quickly and addressed through targeted practice and intervention where necessary.
Impact
The impact of our handwriting curriculum is evident in pupils who:
Form letters accurately and consistently.
Develop increasing fluency and automaticity in handwriting.
Present their work neatly and with pride.
Apply handwriting skills consistently across different subjects and writing tasks.
Write with greater confidence because transcription demands place less strain on working memory.
Are able to focus more fully on vocabulary, sentence construction and composition.
We monitor handwriting through daily classroom practice, work scrutiny and ongoing teacher assessment.
Successful handwriting at Kielder Primary School and Nursery is not measured solely by neat presentation but by the extent to which pupils can write fluently, efficiently and confidently, enabling them to communicate their ideas effectively and achieve success across the curriculum.
